Caretta Caretta's Odyssey
Once it was hunted intensively for its meat and eggs as well as its fat that was used in medicine and cosmetic industry. Its strong shell, shield for its natural predators was not enough to protect it by humans that found it useful for making combs and various items. Hunting was prohibited but touristic development started to destroy the sandy beached of Zakynthos that were used by the turtles for nesting for centuries. Some years ago the alarm rang and Caretta- Caretta was added to the endangered species list that grows longer and longer each year. According to IUCN in 2000 Red List after scientific observation there was a Caretta population reduction that reached 50% in the last 10 years or three generation of sea turtles. National Marine park of Zakynthos tries to protect them from extinction. © Iakovos Hatzistavrou
