Saving the last mountain

Inside the beautiful landscapes of the Appalachians in West Virginia, a war is taking place. A War between coal companies and their employes, politicians and environmental activists.West Virginia is the coal capitol of the United States. In a world that is getting more and more aware of the importance of green power almost all of the generated electricity in the state comes from coal. For many years underground mining has been the traditional way of mining coal, but in the 1970’s a new way of extraction were invented: Mountain Top Removal. A small organization called Mountain Watch founded in 1998 struggle everyday against large coal companies and politicians to put and end to the destruction of their land. But it’s not an easy task. West Virginia is one of the poorest states in USA and in states like Boone County coal has been bringing food to the table for generations. © NICKLAS THEGERSTROM
