Acharnai Olympic village: The negligence of the Olympic spirit
The “glorious Olympic village” in Acharnai hosted during the 2004 Athens Olympics 17.000 athletes from all around the world. Six months after the end of the Olympic games was transformed into an outlying suburb. Most buildings and houses were assigned by OEK, the Organization for the worker’s houses, as primary residence for beneficiary families. In the 366 buildings, 2.929 flats and 17.428 bed sits, houses 8.000 people. Everything else that are taken for granted by most citizens like banks, shopping mall, bars and restaurants are in a long distance. All plans for development of the village
never realized. The negligence from 2005 has been the main characteristic of this peculiar social experiment, set at the foothills of the Parnitha mountains. The true Olympic Spirit of Athens 2004 lies in the broken and faded flags that wave from the houses’ roofs and the road dedicated to the past Hellenic Olympic champions. © FRANCESCA OGGIANO
