Pasaia, a reflection of economic collapse
Of all the European countries, Spain has been gravely affected by the global economic crisis.
The unemployment rate rose from 13,9 % in the fourth quarter of 2008 to 17,4% in the first quarter of
2009, increasing the ranks of the unemployed to more than 4 million. According to the National
Statistics Institute, the industrial production declined 22% in February 2009, after a similar 20,9%
decrease in January.
This data becomes real and can be easily seen in a port. Most of the Spanish industrial ports have their
accounts in the red because of the economical crisis and the case of the port of Pasaia is a clear
example of the effects of the recession. A 35% decrease of the ship traffic in the first quarter of 2009
and the inactivity of the automotive and steel sector makes the port face one of the worst crisis in the
last decades.
Empty warehouses, lack of activity in the docks and frustration in the workers faces are part of the daily
life in this emblematic port located in the north of Spain, a territory well-know by its industrial tradition.
