Samsø, the future island
Samsø is the one and only island in the world which has 100% renewable energy; an objective which the Danish government set itself 10 years ago, in 1998, when it began research into creating an eco-sustainable island.
Wind turbines, a solar plant and biomass combustion guarantee the electricity, hot water and heating needs for the 4300 inhabitants living on the island.
Today, with the addition of a further ten wind turbines offshore, the island produces a 40% surplus of electricity, which is sold to the mainland. © ALESSANDRO GRASSANI / INVISION IMAGES
