Urban Golf
Street golf or urban golf is a game which stems from traditional golf. Individual players or teams hit
a much lighter golf ball in the direction of a ‘hole’ which is part of the urban landscape – such as
garbage bins, road signs, bollards, drains, or the ball can be hit under bridges as far as possible.
This game is very famous and fashionable and is played in most European Capital Cities, including
Paris and London, as well as worldwide from New York to Sydney.
In Paris a group of street golfers called The Association of the 19th Hole makes a sport that is
identical to elitism and richness accessible to everyone by setting a ball on the street and hit!
They also organise tournaments that gathers street golfers from other European countries. In their
last tournament more than 100 people from Switzerland, Germany, England and Spain gathered in
Paris for the During the course of the day the participants competed all over the city until the last
ball was holed out.
This was not an exceptional occasion. The members of the 19th Hole meet every Wednesday in
the streets, parks, bridges or open spaces of Paris to enjoy new challenges and teach new comers
this rather unusual sport.
Although they luck the comfort and relaxation of open spaces like a normal court or the adequate
light, the street golf players seem very please and they claim that they get the same excitement
and challenges as playing in a real golf court.
The balls used for street golf are lighter and softer in order not to hurt pedestrians or people that
pass near by. They do not wish to hurt or anger anybody. As they claim security is the only real rule
that street golfers have to keep.© SIMONE PEROLARI
